Russia releases former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed on humanitarian grounds

Former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed, who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2022, has been released and is traveling to the United States. Global Reach reported that Reed is heading to a U.S. military hospital in Texas, where he will undergo a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation and receive necessary treatment.

Reed's family, including his mother who had traveled to Russia to visit him in the hospital, has already departed for Texas. A U.S. official confirmed that Reed is receiving medical assistance and is returning to the United States. The release was attributed to humanitarian reasons.

The 32-year-old former Marine had been held in a Voronezh prison. In late June, his health significantly worsened, leading to his transfer from the prison hospital to the psychiatric ward of a civilian hospital. His condition was described as catatonic, rendering him unable to move or eat. According to hostage rights groups, Reed was unable to speak, kept his eyes closed, and was being fed through a feeding tube.

U.S. officials and human rights advocates had recently urged Russia to release Reed due to his deteriorating health. His return to the U.S. will ensure he receives continued medical care and psychological support.
