Russia says Ukrainian bus strike kills 5 in border region

Russia stated on Monday that a Ukrainian strike on a bus in the Belgorod border region resulted in the deaths of five civilians, including a child, and left three others in critical condition. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, occurring shortly after Ukraine launched a massive drone assault on Moscow.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, over 400 drones targeted the Russian capital from Sunday into Monday. While most were intercepted, regional governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that at least 10 people were injured by falling debris, and several residential buildings and civilian infrastructure sustained damage. This drone attack followed weekend Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, which local authorities reported killed two people each in Pavlograd and Kramatorsk, and one in Zaporizhzhia.

Both Russia and Ukraine have previously denied targeting civilian populations. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that Ukrainian forces were specifically targeting Russian logistics facilities and an oil depot in response to Russian attacks. "We are responding, justly, to every Russian strike against our cities and communities," Zelenskyy stated on X.

In related news, Ukraine's military publicly denied rumors of a shake-up in its leadership, specifically refuting claims that President Zelenskyy was dismissing the chief of Ukraine's armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi. The denial comes amid ongoing criticism following the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and subsequent protests in Ukraine. Zelenskyy has appointed Yevhenii Khmara as acting defense minister, pending parliamentary approval.
