Russia seeks 12-year prison term for war critic Lev Shlosberg

Russian prosecutors are demanding a 12-year prison sentence for opposition politician Lev Shlosberg, a vocal critic of the war in Ukraine. The sentence, sought by prosecutor Anna Goryacheva at the Pskov city court, is for allegedly discrediting the Russian armed forces.

The Russian prosecutor's office is demanding twelve years and one month in prison for the prominent war opponent and opposition figure Lev Shlosberg.

Shlosberg, the deputy chairman of the liberal Yabloko party, was taken into custody in December after a period of house arrest. He faces accusations, common among war opponents in Russia, of spreading false information about the military. Critics view the trial as politically motivated, aimed at silencing dissent.

Human rights advocates report hundreds of political prisoners in Russia. Shlosberg had previously been sentenced to 420 hours of community service for failing to comply with requirements as a "foreign agent." This designation is applied by Russian authorities to individuals and organizations allegedly receiving foreign funding and acting against Russia's interests.
