Russia Threatens UK Military Targets Over Storm Shadow Missile Use in Ukraine

Russia has issued a stark warning to the United Kingdom, threatening to strike British military assets in Ukraine and potentially beyond its borders. The threat was articulated by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariya Zakharova, who stated that any Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using British weapons could lead to retaliatory action against UK military objectives. Zakharova specifically referenced the Storm Shadow long-range missiles, alleging that the UK's transfer of these weapons and their production technology to Ukraine is a move that will not allow Britain to "avoid responsibility." Russia has not presented evidence to substantiate claims of Ukrainian strikes on its territory using these missiles. The Kremlin has consistently accused Western nations of escalating the conflict by providing military aid to Ukraine. Adding to the pressure, the Kremlin declared that the UK's actions, including providing information for the production of SCALP missiles (the French designation for Storm Shadow), are hindering peace efforts in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the UK is "methodically and regularly pouring gasoline on the fire" and is actively planning to obstruct any progress toward peace. He asserted that Russia's armed forces are gathering intelligence to identify and destroy facilities involved in the production of these missiles and other military equipment. The UK government has indicated it would allow defense company MBDA to release information regarding British components used in the French and UK-made missiles, potentially enabling Kyiv to manufacture them domestically. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, during a visit to Kyiv coinciding with Ukraine's Independence Day, pledged continued military support. "Despite the outrageous Russian threats to my country, we will continue to support Ukraine's defense," Burnham stated at a meeting of Ukraine's international backers. In a separate development, Ukraine and the UK signed an agreement for Ukraine to provide Britain with access to a vast dataset of battlefield images. This data, known as 'Avengers,' is currently used to train Ukraine's autonomous drones and is described by London as a "goldmine" that could eventually be used to protect military bases, airports, prisons, and other critical infrastructure.
