Russia, U.S. Foreign Ministers Meet in Philippines to Discuss Ukraine Peace

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a bilateral meeting in the Philippines, focusing on the prospects for peace in Ukraine. The discussion, which lasted over 30 minutes, took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Pasay, within the Metro Manila region.

The meeting was reportedly initiated by the United States, according to Russian news agency Tass. Secretary Rubio conveyed that the U.S. remains open to facilitating peace in Ukraine should a suitable opportunity emerge. He observed that recent months have seen a stagnation in peace negotiations, and the discussion with Lavrov aimed to explore possibilities for reviving these talks.

Both ministers met in the Philippines, which holds the chairmanship of ASEAN this year. The summit provided a platform for high-level diplomatic engagement, with Rubio also holding separate meetings with the foreign ministers of China, South Korea, Japan, and India. The European Union was represented by High Representative Kaja Kallas.

This diplomatic engagement occurs amidst broader international efforts to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting between the top diplomats of Russia and the U.S. signals a continued, albeit cautious, dialogue on potential pathways toward resolving the conflict, even as formal peace talks have reportedly stalled.
