Russian air strikes kill eight, injure dozens in Kyiv

Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, killing at least eight people and injuring over three dozen as drones and missiles struck residential buildings and a hotel.

President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned of a possible overnight attack and cut short his visit to Dublin for the start of Ireland's EU presidency term. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, confirmed eight deaths and about three dozen damaged locations across the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported 34 more injured, noting the collapse of the first to sixth floors of an apartment building after a direct hit.

Video footage showed emergency services working through the rubble of a nine-story building as dawn broke. A fire burned at the top of a building on the central Shevchenko Boulevard, while other areas saw blown-out windows and destroyed cars. People crowded into underground stations with belongings as air raid alerts were issued for most of Ukraine.

Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, described it as "another horrific night for the residents of the city, who were forced to spend it in shelters." Neighboring Poland briefly scrambled fighter jets as a preventive measure but reported no airspace violation.
