Russian propaganda director dies after falling from bridge in Georgia

Russian director Anna Tyc, known for creating propaganda content about Russia's war in Ukraine, has died after falling from a suspension bridge into the rocky Great Liakhvi River in occupied Georgia. The incident occurred on May 21, the day after she presented her film about participants in the "special military operation," as Russia calls its war against Ukraine.

A video circulating on social media shows people on the bridge jumping and shaking it. Tyc reportedly asked them to stop. A strong, gusty wind was blowing that day, and the river's current was very strong. At one point, people on the bridge lost their balance and fell into the water, sustaining injuries that prevented them from quickly reaching the shore.

One man who was on the bridge with Tyc was rescued, but she was carried downstream by the current. Rescuers found her body three days later, approximately 35 kilometers from where she fell. Following an examination by authorities, her remains were transported to the morgue for forensic examination.

This tragedy occurred just one year after the death of her husband, Jerzy Tyc, a Polish pro-Russian activist and former soldier who died fighting on Russia's side against Ukraine. He had founded the "Kursk" society in Poland, dedicated to preserving and restoring Soviet monuments and soldiers' graves. He had visited Moscow regularly since 2016 and was interviewed by Russian state media.

Anna Tyc, then Anna Zacharian, met Jerzy Tyc in 2016 when she sought his help finding her grandfather's grave from World War II. They later developed a romantic relationship. In 2018, while married to Jerzy Tyc, Anna was detained by Polish security services and accused of endangering national security and espionage. She was subsequently deported from Poland, and Jerzy Tyc followed her to Russia. There, he joined the Russian Historical Society, accused Polish authorities of attempting to falsify history, and collaborated with Russian propaganda. In 2025, he voluntarily joined the Russian army to fight against Ukraine but died in combat in eastern Ukraine in June 2025, with his remains found in September.
