Ruwi's CBD makeover brings hope, but leaves walkers and evening crowds waiting

Muscat Municipality's ambitious redevelopment of Ruwi's Central Business District aims to transform the historic commercial hub into a modern, organized, and pedestrian-friendly destination. The project involves comprehensive infrastructure upgrades to roads, pavements, and public spaces, intended to enhance Muscat's urban landscape and support sustainable development.

The long-term vision has been welcomed, but the ongoing construction has temporarily disrupted the vibrant community life that once defined the area. For many residents, the redevelopment has come at the cost of cherished daily routines. The popular walking route from Muscat Exchange to the Oman Post Office building, once shaded by mature trees, now offers little space for pedestrians due to excavation.

The transformation has also silenced the lively recreational scene that animated the neighborhood after sunset. Children who played football and cricket in the wadi are gone, their usual grounds occupied by construction. Nightly cricket matches near Sri Saravana Bhavan, which drew crowds of families and spectators, have halted. Even informal gatherings along the pavements, where neighbors shared conversations in the cool evening breeze, have largely vanished.

Despite the temporary inconveniences, residents remain optimistic about the project's outcome. They understand the need for redevelopment and eagerly anticipate its completion. The revamped CBD is expected to offer a more comfortable and attractive environment, combining modern infrastructure with the neighborhood's enduring social character, allowing residents to once again enjoy walks and community gatherings.
