Salt Mine Movements Detected in Romania; Increased Water Salinity Reported

SALROM, Romania's national salt company, reported that specialists detected movements within the salt massif at the Praid Salt Mine between July 25-27, 2026. This phenomenon coincided with a rise in the salinity of the Corund stream, a change that is under constant monitoring by involved institutions.

Despite the detected micro-vibrations in the area, specialists from the National Institute for Earth Physics Research and Development (INCDFP) have found no evidence of a new collapse or surface instability. SALROM's analysis indicates that the micro-vibrations are compatible with stress redistribution within the salt massif. The company stressed that such manifestations do not inherently signal a collapse but warrant continuous monitoring.

Surface observations, including drone surveys and data from an automatic topographic station, along with ground checks by SALROM specialists, have not revealed any changes in the terrain or other signs of instability. The intensity and frequency of the detected micro-vibrations are reportedly decreasing.

As a precautionary measure, SALROM proposed escalating the alert level at the Praid Salt Mine to a "yellow code." This measure aims to enhance monitoring and facilitate a swifter response from authorities, though it does not necessitate the evacuation of the local population. Continuous monitoring of seismic, geotechnical, topographic, and hydrogeological parameters remains in effect.
