Same classroom, different pace: Edtech seeks to overcome limits of one-to-many teaching

Students in the same classroom can now follow different lessons according to their own progress under a personalised learning system developed by South Korean edtech company Punchlab.

The company said it applied the data-driven system at its directly operated Murmur English Academy. Students receive separate vocabulary, grammar and reading assignments based on their levels. The system records their answers immediately, identifies the causes of wrong answers and requires them to try again before moving to the next stage.

The technology also changes the teacher’s role. Instead of relying only on one-way lectures, teachers use a dedicated dashboard to track each student’s learning in real time. They can identify students who repeatedly miss a particular question or whose progress has stalled, then offer guidance when it is needed.

Punchlab recently extended the system from in-person classes to Zoom lessons. The company said the dashboard addresses a weakness of online teaching by showing how students are actually solving problems and whether they have stopped progressing, even when they are participating remotely.

The system is intended to combine the convenience of online classes with the close monitoring associated with in-person learning. Punchlab said it could provide another option for students who want to reduce travel time or live far from major academy districts. A company representative said the goal was not simply to broadcast classroom lectures online, but to reproduce its accumulated personalised learning-management methods in a remote setting.
