Samoa's Seine Stowers Smashes Record for Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Gold

Samoa's Seine Stowers secured a gold medal in weightlifting at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, dominating the women's 77kg category. Stowers set a new Games record in the snatch with a lift of 107kg and followed up with 130kg in the clean-and-jerk, achieving a record total of 237kg.

Isabella Brown of England took the silver medal with a total lift of 229kg, while Laura Hughes from Wales earned bronze with 224kg. In other weightlifting events, Samoa's Emmanuel Shalom Palota Ulimasao placed sixth in the men's 94kg category, and 17-year-old Sefulu Seuao finished sixth in the women's 86kg category.

The track and field events saw numerous Pacific island athletes achieve season's best performances. Fiji's Heleina Valetta Young ran an equal season's best in the women's 200m heats but did not qualify. Tuvalu's Vaioleta Luka also recorded a season's best in the same event before being disqualified.

In boxing, Fiji's Jasmine Daunakamakama advanced to the semifinals of the women's 57kg quarterfinals, guaranteeing her at least a bronze medal. However, Samoa's Michael Seko lost his quarterfinal match in the men's 90+kg category. The netball competition saw Tonga Tala suffer another heavy defeat against England.
