Santiago Peña comments on meeting with former President Mario Abdo Benítez

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña described his recent encounter with former President Mario Abdo Benítez as an opportunity to convey respect, marking their first meeting since Peña took office.

The two leaders met at a celebration hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Paraguay commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Peña noted that while they had discussions during the presidential transition period, this was their first face-to-face meeting in three years.

Peña also interacted with another former president, Nicanor Duarte Frutos, at the event. He characterized his conversation with Duarte Frutos as typical, given their regular interactions and his respect for Duarte Frutos's past roles as party leader and president.

Addressing the broader political context, Peña stressed the importance of unity within the Colorado Party (ANR) for the upcoming municipal elections. He stated that despite any political differences, the party members are "embraced" to ensure the victory of their candidates, advocating for "concord" and "party unity" to "put Paraguay first."
