Santos clinches qualification for the round of 16

Brazilian club Santos took a significant step towards the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 with a dominant 4-1 away win against Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). The first leg of their playoff tie, originally scheduled for Caracas, was relocated to the Polideportivo Misael Delgado in Valencia following earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24. Despite an early attempt by UCV to assert control, with shots from Kendrys Silva and Edwin Mosquera, Santos quickly seized possession and began posing a threat. Gabriel Bontempo opened the scoring for Santos in the 35th minute, capitalizing on a rebound. In the second half, Santos extended their lead with goals from Gabriel Menino in the 57th minute and Thaciano in the 67th minute. Ronielson da Silva added a fourth goal in the 84th minute, seemingly putting the tie beyond doubt. UCV managed a consolation goal through Maicol Ruiz in the 87th minute, but the damage was already done. The return leg is scheduled for July 28 in Santos, Brazil, where the Brazilian side will aim to defend their substantial lead.
