Sarajevo Film Festival to honour Mexican actor Luna, Iran’s filmmaker Farhadi

The Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) is set to celebrate cinematic excellence by honoring prominent figures in the film industry at its 32nd edition, commencing August 14. Mexican actor, director, and producer Diego Luna will be presented with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award.

Festival Director Jovan Marjanovic stated that Luna's "exceptional body of work" has profoundly impacted contemporary cinema. The SFF highlighted Luna's creative range, social consciousness, and dedication to enhancing Latino and Hispanic representation on international platforms. His recent accolades include Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his role and executive production in the Disney+ series "Andor."

Luna is also scheduled to present his latest directorial feature, "Ashes," which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and will conduct a masterclass for aspiring filmmakers. His presence adds significant star power and artistic depth to the festival's program.

Through his exceptional body of work, Diego Luna has left a profound mark on contemporary cinema, and it is our great honour to present him with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo.

Joining Luna in being honored is Iran's Asghar Farhadi, a celebrated filmmaker renowned for his numerous international awards, including two Academy Awards. Farhadi, who previously chaired the SFF jury in 2018, will be recognized with a retrospective showcasing his critically acclaimed films. This year's feature film competition jury will be led by British actress Emily Watson.

The festival will open with "Fatherland," the latest film from Oscar-winning director Pawel Pawlikowski, which concludes his Cold War trilogy. Pawlikowski noted the film's thematic resonance with Sarajevo's history, stating, "It seems like the film suits Sarajevo Film Festival because it's steeped in history and in conflict, in situations which are still within living memory in Bosnia."
