Saudi Arabia leads global efforts in responsible AI use

Saudi Arabia is taking a leading role in shaping the global governance of artificial intelligence, aiming to ensure its responsible and safe application for the benefit of humanity. Dr. Abdullah Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, president of the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to this cause during high-level meetings in Switzerland.

Al-Ghamdi met with Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Sangbo Kim, Vice President of the World Bank for Technology and Artificial Intelligence, and Dr. Carsten Ullmann, Federal Minister for Digital Transformation of Germany. These discussions focused on strengthening international cooperation in data and AI, establishing clear frameworks for emerging technologies, and promoting ethical and responsible adoption to support the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

The Kingdom is actively promoting its initiatives in AI governance and ethics, notably through the establishment of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh, under UNESCO's patronage. This center aims to be a global platform for research and policy development in advanced technologies.

Saudi Arabia views AI as a strategic enabler for economic and social development, driving productivity and innovation. The nation supports organizations in adopting AI through clear guidelines, risk management tools, and accountability mechanisms. Al-Ghamdi invited international leaders to the fourth Global Forum on AI Ethics, organized by SDAIA in collaboration with UNESCO and ICAIRE in Riyadh from September 14-17, 2026.
