SB police officer beaten to death in Savar

A police officer who intervened when youths allegedly assaulted an elderly auto-rickshaw driver was beaten to death in Savar, while his son remains in critical condition.

Md Altaf Hossain, 57, a sub-inspector with the Special Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, was returning home from his small garment factory when he saw several youths in a private car attacking the driver near his residence in Janata Housing, Aminbazar, according to police and witnesses cited by the local station officer.

When Altaf protested, the youths allegedly turned on him. He identified himself as a police officer and ran into his factory, but the group allegedly called 15 to 20 others and attacked the tin-shed building. They vandalised machinery and other important items before beating Altaf and his son, Md Arif, until both were unconscious, police said.

Neighbours took the pair to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Doctors declared Altaf dead, while Arif was admitted for treatment in critical condition. Police said they had visited the scene and were trying to identify and arrest those involved.
