Search for missing 71-year-old surfer from Heraklion ends tragically

The search for 71-year-old surfer Nikos Chalkiadakis from Heraklion ended tragically when swimmers found a body floating near the Amirandes hotel in Gouves.

Relatives identified the body by the watch and necklace Chalkiadakis had been wearing. He disappeared on Monday, August 31, after entering the sea alone on his windsurfing board despite difficult weather conditions.

Chalkiadakis, a well-known businessman in Heraklion and an enthusiast of surfing and climbing, left his burgundy van at the shore before setting out. His partner, who usually waited for him on the coast, was away travelling.

Authorities began searching the waters from Ammoudara to Dia after he was reported missing. An aircraft joined the operation, while boats carrying athletes searched the sea. His windsurfing board was found on Tuesday, reducing hopes of finding him alive.

Swimmers spotted the body on Thursday afternoon, September 3. The Coast Guard was notified at 6:30 p.m. and approached the location identified by the swimmers. The body was identified shortly afterward.
