Security forces counter unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban targeting Kurram border posts

Pakistani security forces launched a robust retaliatory response against the Afghan Taliban after unprovoked firing targeted border posts in Kurram, security sources reported Sunday. The Afghan Taliban initiated the aggression with heavy weapons, including mortars, prompting an immediate and forceful counterattack from Pakistani forces.

Using both light and heavy weaponry, including artillery, Pakistani forces targeted Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions, and defensive checkpoints. Security sources stated that Pakistani forces maintained complete control over the border areas, delivering a response that compelled the Afghan Taliban to abandon multiple posts and flee. The situation remains under continuous monitoring, with security forces on high alert for any further provocations.

This incident follows a pattern of cross-border aggression. On February 26, Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against terrorist hideouts following similar unprovoked firing. In early April, security forces thwarted an attack on a border post in KP’s Ghulam Khan Sector, resulting in the deaths of 37 attackers and injuries to over 80. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later reported that 796 terrorists and Afghan Taliban operatives had been killed and over 1,043 injured since the operation began.

Earlier incidents include the destruction of Afghan Taliban gun positions in South Waziristan on April 28, which injured three civilians. On April 28, mortar shells fired from across the Pak-Afghan border injured five people, including four children and a woman, in Angoor Adda village, South Waziristan. Islamabad has consistently urged the Taliban administration in Kabul to eliminate terrorist sanctuaries on Afghan soil used for attacks within Pakistan, but officials indicate these appeals have been ignored.
