Security guard stabbed by suspected shoplifter: Winnipeg police

A 22-year-old security guard is in stable condition after being stabbed by a suspected shoplifter in Winnipeg. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the 2700 block of Portage Avenue, according to a news release from the Winnipeg Police Service.

Officers responded to the call around 4 p.m. Police stated that the security guard approached a man believed to be shoplifting and asked him to leave the store. In response, the suspect allegedly produced a sharp weapon and stabbed the guard in the upper body.

Following the assault, the suspect fled the scene with stolen merchandise. The injured security guard was transported to a local hospital. While initially reported to be in unstable condition, his status has since been upgraded to stable.

The Winnipeg police major crimes unit is currently investigating the stabbing. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident as of the latest reports.
