Seeking Treatment at Home or Abroad: What Patients Should Consider

A social media comparison between medical examinations in Indonesia and services in Penang, Malaysia, has reopened a familiar question for Indonesian patients: when does treatment abroad make sense?

The debate has drawn mixed reactions. Some users shared positive experiences in Penang, while others argued that patients should use Indonesian facilities when their medical needs can be handled there. Speculation also emerged that the content might promote a hospital or medical travel service, although that claim has not been confirmed.

She rejected the idea that the flow began only with social media promotion, saying it was not simply a seasonal trend or the result of viral marketing.

Birgita said travelers from major Javanese cities, including Jakarta and Surabaya, now have easier access to medical facilities there. She identified communication with medical teams, competitive costs, shorter service times and modern medical equipment as common reasons patients choose Penang.

But she cautioned against making healthcare decisions based only on online testimonials. Patients still need to weigh their diagnosis, doctors’ advice, possible follow-up tests, medical risks and ability to pay. Birgita also declined to speculate about the people behind widely discussed content involving an examination for appendicitis. She said the choice of facility should depend on each patient’s needs and condition.
