Seimas postpones stricter requirements for basic education

The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, has voted to delay the implementation of stricter educational requirements for students seeking a basic education certificate. The parliament agreed to postpone the requirement that 10th-grade students must achieve at least a threshold level on the PUPP exam, which is the examination for obtaining a basic education.

This decision effectively pushes back the deadline for this requirement. The new rule will now take effect starting September 1, 2029. The vote saw overwhelming support, with 98 members of parliament voting in favor of the postponement, while only 3 voted against it, and 2 abstained.

The postponement was a result of a presidential veto, which Seimas ultimately supported. The original intention behind the stricter requirements was to ensure a baseline level of academic achievement among students completing their basic education. However, the delay suggests ongoing discussions or concerns about the readiness of the education system or students to meet these elevated standards by the initial deadline.
