Seismic Swarm Continues in Campi Flegrei; Dozens of Tremors Recorded

The seismic swarm in Italy's Campi Flegrei volcanic region is ongoing, with authorities warning of the possibility of further tremors, potentially exceeding magnitude 3. Civil Protection and Sea Policies Minister Nello Musumeci stated that "the seismic swarm, as the volcanologists tell us, is still in progress. Further events with magnitudes above 3 could therefore occur."

Musumeci urged "prudence and self-control from everyone" in light of the continuing seismic activity. Currently, 8 buildings and 5 commercial activities have been declared unusable. Approximately 290 people, organized into 130 family units, have been evacuated from their homes. Many have found temporary accommodation in equipped areas provided by the municipalities of Naples and Pozzuoli. Five individuals have been hospitalized due to trauma and fractures sustained during the events.

Rail services have largely resumed normal operations, with the exception of the Cumana line between Bagnoli and Torregaveta, which may be reactivated by the following morning. Electrical services have been restored. The port of Pozzuoli has been closed by the Port Authority, and maritime traffic has been rerouted to Naples. The port authority has also prohibited access to maritime state property areas located beneath collapsed rocky slopes and adjacent waters along the coast between Portici and Bagnoli.

Following the strongest tremor of magnitude 4.7 recorded the previous evening, which was the most powerful in 40 years, seismographs have detected around sixty earthquakes in the bradyseism area. Most of these were of minor intensity. The strongest tremor in recent hours, measuring 3.1 magnitude, occurred at 5:47 AM and was distinctly felt by residents in Pozzuoli, Bacoli, and several Naples neighborhoods. Structural checks on buildings are continuing. Firefighters evacuated 18 family units overnight due to safety concerns. The mayor of Bacoli reported rockfalls and plaster damage to buildings in his municipality but confirmed no homes were declared unusable and no citizens were evacuated there, with no injuries reported in Bacoli.
