Selangor Assembly reviews all members' status after bankruptcy disqualification report

The Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is conducting a thorough review of all its members' statuses after one elected representative reportedly lost their qualification due to bankruptcy.

Selangor DUN Speaker Lau Weng San confirmed that the investigation is underway but has not yet identified the specific assemblyman involved. He stated that the review is based on the Selangor State Constitution and will take time to complete.

"We have to check because there are all sorts of possibilities. We have to check, I will inform you after getting (complete) information," Lau told reporters. He added that the process involves checking various aspects and will be communicated once all information is gathered.

While the identity of the disqualified assemblyman remains unconfirmed, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari indicated that the Speaker would determine the matter this week before informing the Election Commission (SPR). The absence of an assemblyman from a recent session does not automatically mean they are facing disqualification, Lau cautioned, emphasizing the need to avoid prejudice until all facts are verified.

Lau also noted that issues of disqualification have occurred in previous terms, but stressed that the current situation requires careful verification. The decision on whether a by-election will be held rests with the Election Commission.
