Sen. Mark Kelly Criticizes Trump Administration's Iran Strategy, Calls Defense Spending Irresponsible

Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona asserted on Sunday that the Trump administration is struggling in its conflict with Iran, urging President Trump to seek an exit strategy five months after the war commenced. Kelly stated on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that the administration is "stuck" and that the president must find a way out.

They're stuck, they're responsible for this, and the president is the one that has to try to figure out a way out of this.

Kelly suggested that the solution does not lie in repeating the same actions but rather in appointing individuals with expertise in negotiating with Iran and rebuilding alliances. He proposed bringing in people who understand how to engage with the Iranians and reassemble a coalition of allies.

President Trump announced on Saturday night the cancellation of a pending attack on Iran, indicating that a preliminary peace deal framework had been reached following recent escalations after a ceasefire collapsed last month. According to a regional official involved in mediation efforts, the president's proposal involves the U.S. and Iran returning to negotiations.

I would suggest to him, though, that the solution is not to do the same thing that he's been doing, not to have his real estate buddy and his son-in-law in charge of a negotiation.

Despite the war's unpopularity among Americans, polling indicates a close split on which party has a better approach to Iran, with 32% favoring Mr. Trump and the GOP, and 30% favoring Democrats. However, Kelly placed the blame squarely on the president, accusing him of entering the war "without a strategic goal, without a plan, without a timeline."

Kelly, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees, also voiced concerns regarding the Pentagon's budget requests. He criticized the administration's push for $67 billion in supplemental funding and a $1.5 trillion budget request for fiscal year 2027, especially after last year's defense budget was presented as a "one-time generational investment." Kelly argued that this spending is irresponsible, approaching the total defense expenditure of all other countries globally in a year, and called it a "blank check."
