Senator Romário Leaves PL, Backs Eduardo Paes for Rio Governor

Senator Romário has announced his exit from the Liberal Party (PL), leaving him without party affiliation and declaring his support for Eduardo Paes in the upcoming Rio de Janeiro gubernatorial election. The former football star's departure from the party, associated with Jair and Flávio Bolsonaro, occurred just before the official start of the election campaign.

I have my positions, Eduardo has his, and we don't need to agree on everything. What matters to me is Rio. I believe he has the best conditions today to govern the state, build solutions, and tackle problems that have persisted for many years and that no governor has managed to solve so far. My choice is made, and I will support him publicly.

Romário's press office confirmed that he will remain unaffiliated for the time being, with no current discussions regarding a new party membership. While Eduardo Paes has the backing of President Lula da Silva, Romário did not specify whether he would endorse a presidential candidate. He emphasized that his decision is based on his evaluation of Rio de Janeiro's current situation and the challenges the next governor will face.
