Senior Clerics Issue Moral Appeal for Dignified NU Congress

Senior clerics of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) convened in Jakarta to issue a moral appeal ahead of the organization's 35th Muktamar (congress). The gathering, held at the PBNU building, brought together prominent figures including KH Ma'ruf Amin, KH Abdullah Ubab Maimoen, and KH Ali Akbar Marbun. Several other influential clerics joined the forum virtually.

There are worrying issues because they are marked by unseemly methods for the efforts in the upcoming Muktamar.

KH Ma'ruf Amin, Mustasyar of PBNU, stated that the meeting was prompted by "worrying dynamics" and "unseemly methods" emerging as the Muktamar approaches. He stressed that the forum's purpose was to reinforce a moral call for the benefit of NU, not for any individual's interests. Amin specifically cautioned against allowing the Muktamar to be undermined by contentious issues, particularly regarding the selection of the Rais Aam (supreme leader) through the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (Ahwa) mechanism.

Ahwa is the representation of the ulama to choose the Rais Aam who is born from conscience.

Amin emphasized that Ahwa should represent the best ulama, chosen based on conscience, capacity, and integrity, free from any external influence or "orders." He reiterated that the Muktamar must proceed according to NU's ethical principles and conscience, without interference from any party.

Following the forum, the senior clerics presented a seven-point moral appeal for a dignified Muktamar. KH Muhibbul Aman Aly, Rais Syuriyah of PBNU, conveyed the appeal, which calls for a "cool, honest, just, integrity-filled, and dignified" congress. The clerics urged all NU members, especially those entrusted with leadership, to collectively ensure the Muktamar upholds these principles.
