Senior NU Figure Warns Against Political Interference in Muktamar

As the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) prepares for its Muktamar, a senior figure has issued a stark warning against political interference. Abdul Hamid Rahayaan, a long-serving NU member, implored those with voting rights to exercise extreme caution when selecting the organization's next leaders. He emphasized that the choices made at the Muktamar will critically shape NU's future, determining whether it maintains its status as an independent, broad-based community organization or succumbs to political interests.

NU is owned by all Nahdliyin members. Therefore, Muktamar participants must choose leaders with a clear mind. We must not allow NU to be controlled by certain political interests, which ultimately will only widen the divisions among NU members.

Hamid expressed deep concern over the current dynamics within the organization. He urged Muktamar participants to place the collective interests of NU above those of any specific group or practical political agenda. "NU belongs to all its members," Hamid stated. "Therefore, Muktamar participants must choose leaders with a clear mind. We must not allow NU to be controlled by certain political interests, which ultimately will only widen the divisions among NU members."

The primary challenge facing NU, according to Hamid, extends beyond leadership succession. It crucially involves safeguarding the organization's integrity and ensuring it remains neutral, standing above all political factions and interests. NU has historically earned respect for its role in promoting moderation, serving as a protector of the community, and acting as a moral compass for the nation. Consequently, the elected leader must be a unifier, not someone who introduces new polarization within the Nahdliyin community.

Hamid also cautioned politicians and external forces against transforming the Muktamar into a battleground for their own interests. "Let NU determine its own destiny. Do not disrupt NU with practical political interests," he asserted. He believes that NU, as a large organization, requires leadership focused on the welfare of its members, not the agendas of specific groups. He advised NU members to thoroughly examine the track record, organizational experience, leadership capacity, and independence of each candidate.
