Indonesia's Constitutional Court (MK) has emphasized that the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government must complete all legal regulations for the 2029 elections before the electoral process commences. The court issued this reminder on August 12, 2026, even as it rejected a specific petition (No. 256/PUU-XXIV/2026), reaffirming its stance that finalizing election laws is a mandatory consequence of its previous ruling.

The core change involves separating national elections, President/Vice President, DPR, and DPD, from regional elections, which will be held two to two-and-a-half years after the inauguration of the President and national legislative members.

The experience of the 2024 elections, which involved voters simultaneously casting ballots for five different positions, proved to be overwhelming. The KPU (General Elections Commission) believes that staggering the elections will reduce the workload, prevent casualties caused by exhaustion, and ultimately enhance the quality of election administration.
