Serbia battles 25 active wildfires amid high risk warning

Serbia is facing a significant challenge as 25 wildfires rage across the country, the government reported on Friday. The Operational Team of the National Emergency Management Headquarters confirmed that all available resources are being deployed to combat the blazes.

Four areas have been identified as particularly critical: Sumarak within the Deliblato Sands nature reserve, Mount Stolovi, the village of Breznica near Bujanovac, and Gornji Brestovac in the Bojnik municipality. Efforts are concentrated in these regions to contain the fires.

The Serbian national weather service (RHMZ) has issued a stark warning, indicating that the risk of new fires igniting and existing ones spreading remains "very high." This heightened danger is attributed to a combination of factors, including strong winds expected in the coming days, a prolonged period without significant rainfall, and parched vegetation.

Despite scattered, localized showers, the overall dry conditions and anticipated high winds create a volatile environment, making wildfire prevention and suppression a top priority for authorities.
