Serbia introduces registration for electric bikes with pedals

Serbia is implementing new regulations aimed at identifying and registering electric bicycles that feature pedals and a seating position. The government has adopted a decree outlining the specific conditions for these vehicles, which often blur the lines between traditional bicycles and powered mobility devices.

Under the new rules, owners will be required to ascertain the technical specifications of their electric bikes. Following this, they must obtain a specific sticker indicating the vehicle's classification, which could range from a bicycle to a moped or motorcycle, based on its power and speed. Subsequently, the vehicle must pass a technical inspection and undergo registration.

The regulations are set to apply to vehicles that were manufactured and imported into Serbia, or factory-assembled within the country, no later than June 27 of this year, and for which a proper vehicle type has not yet been determined. The deadline for submitting requests to determine technical characteristics is February 1 of next year, with the application for registration in the Unified Vehicle Register due by March 1 of the same year. This move aims to bring clarity and order to the classification and legal status of these increasingly popular electric vehicles.
