Serbia: Minimum wage talks confirmed for August

Talks between Serbian unions and employers regarding the minimum wage are set to commence on August 10, according to the Belgrade daily Danas. This confirmation signals a crucial step in determining the financial floor for workers in the country.

The Social-Economic Council, comprising representatives from the government, unions, and employers, will deliberate on the minimum wage for the following year. Ultimately, the Serbian government holds the authority to make the final decision on the matter. Currently, Serbia's net minimum wage hovers around 550 Euros, as reported by Danas.

Government officials have previously pledged to increase the minimum wage to approximately 650 Euros by the end of 2027. However, union officials have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of this target, suggesting that such a level might only be achievable in 2028. They also cautioned that previous increases in the minimum wage, particularly the two hikes last year, forced several companies to cease operations.
