Serie A Tightens Rules on Time-Wasting, Introducing Several Changes

Serie A is set to implement stricter regulations aimed at curbing time-wasting in matches, with the changes scheduled to take effect from the 2026/2027 season. The Italian league's governing body, along with representatives from all 20 participating clubs, convened on August 18, 2026, to discuss and finalize these new rules.

All the necessary technical information must be provided before the match begins, especially regarding the rule changes introduced this season.

The primary focus of the new regulations is to reduce the amount of time play is stopped, thereby increasing the effective playing time within each match. This initiative follows protocols tested during a recent summer World Cup. According to reports, officials from the Serie A refereeing body and the league's technical director emphasized the importance of clear communication and consistent application of the rules among all stakeholders.

Significant adjustments will be made to player substitutions, throw-ins, and goal kicks. For substitutions, players being replaced must leave the field within 10 seconds of the substitution board being raised. Failure to do so will result in the incoming player being held back until the next stoppage in play. This measure is intended to streamline the substitution process and minimize delays.
