Several injured as Lufthansa jet tips onto its nose in Frankfurt

Several staff members sustained injuries when a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner tipped onto its nose at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday. The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. local time, just before passengers were scheduled to board the aircraft for its flight to Los Angeles.

Lufthansa reported that the aircraft's nose gear "unexpectedly" retracted while it was parked. This caused the plane's nose to fall several meters, resulting in damage to the doors of the nose gear bay. Cabin crew and ground staff were on board at the time and received medical treatment for what a spokesperson later described as minor injuries.

The flight to Los Angeles was canceled. Experts are currently examining the aircraft at the scene, and Lufthansa plans to move the one-year-old jet, delivered in January, to a hangar later Thursday for further inspections and repairs.

Boeing acknowledged awareness of the incident and stated its support for the customer. Videos from the scene show the plane's front wheels sliding forward before its nose dropped, narrowly missing a ground crew member. This incident echoes a 2021 event at London Heathrow Airport involving a Boeing 787's nose landing gear retracting during maintenance, which was attributed to a locking pin being inserted incorrectly.
