SFDA approves first daily oral weight-loss drug for adults with obesity

Saudi Arabia's Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has greenlit Foundaio, a pioneering once-daily oral medication designed to assist adults struggling with obesity or overweight conditions. This approval marks a significant step in providing new therapeutic options for long-term weight management and maintenance.

The newly approved drug contains the active ingredient orforglipron. It functions by activating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors, a mechanism known to help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. By doing so, Foundaio aims to reduce food intake and support sustained weight loss, offering a convenient oral alternative to other GLP-1 therapies that may require injections.

The SFDA's decision followed a thorough evaluation of Foundaio's safety, efficacy, and quality. This assessment was underpinned by robust evidence from two major Phase 3 clinical trials, which collectively involved over 3,000 adults with obesity who did not have diabetes. These trials, spanning 72 weeks, demonstrated the drug's potential benefits when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
