Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek may adopt 27 documents, Indian Express reports

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation may adopt a package of 27 documents at its summit in Bishkek, according to The Indian Express, which cited sources familiar with the preparations.

The package is expected to include the Bishkek Declaration and a protocol amending the organisation’s charter. Other proposed documents would address practical cooperation on climate change, information exchange and artificial intelligence.

The agenda also includes possible measures related to the Universal Centre and the SCO Anti-Drug Centre. Planned statements could cover nuclear security, preventive diplomacy, emergency cooperation and efforts to combat synthetic drugs. Other proposals concern energy conservation and green technologies.

A potentially notable institutional change is the possible addition of English to the SCO’s official and working languages. Russian and Chinese currently hold that status. The final decision would come after the summit and the publication of official documents.

The summit’s “SCO Plus” format is expected to discuss the role of the United Nations in shaping a fair and multipolar world order. Representatives from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia, Togo, Türkiye, Egypt and Turkmenistan are expected to participate, along with officials from organisations including the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
