Sheer display of federal might could not stop Adeleke’s victory, says Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State on his re-election, asserting that the "sheer display of federal might" could not override the people's will.

In a statement released on Sunday, Makinde described Adeleke's victory as a triumph for democracy and the people of Osun State. He emphasized that the election outcome demonstrated the electorate's ultimate power within a democratic system. Makinde, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, commended the Osun electorate for their courage.

He noted that voters showed bravery by supporting their preferred candidate despite what he characterized as violence and the use of federal institutions and powers aimed at suppressing their will. Makinde suggested the election exposed the limitations of political power when challenged by a determined electorate, reiterating that the people's will ultimately prevails.

Makinde also cautioned against politicians who resort to underhanded tactics to win elections at any cost, regardless of the consequences for democracy and the rule of law. He recalled warning in a previous newsletter that the rule of law must take precedence over political interests, and he believes the Osun voters have reinforced this lesson.
