Sheinbaum congratulates Spain on World Cup win, Mexico on hosting

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum lauded Spain's "well-deserved" victory in the 2026 World Cup, while also celebrating Mexico's role as the "best host" for the tournament it co-organized with the United States and Canada.

"Congratulations to Spain for deservedly conquering the championship," Sheinbaum stated on social media after Spain's 1-0 win over Argentina in the final. She described the World Cup as a "great celebration of joy, emotion, and unity among peoples, where sport once again demonstrated its ability to bring nations closer."

Attending the final in New York at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, Sheinbaum also extended congratulations to the United States and Canada, emphasizing that the three host nations "proved that when we work together, we are capable of making great projects a reality and leaving a legacy of cooperation, friendship, and hope for the world." Mexico hosted its third World Cup, following the 1970 and 1986 editions, becoming the first country to achieve this in a tournament that featured an expanded format with 48 teams and 104 matches. Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey served as venues for 13 matches.
