Sheinbaum does not plan to meet former Colombian President Petro during his Mexico visit

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Wednesday that she does not anticipate meeting with former Colombian President Gustavo Petro during his visit to Mexico starting August 30. Petro is set to travel to Mexico City between August 30 and September 2 for an academic event, marking his first international trip since leaving office on August 7. "I do not foresee any meeting, nor have I been asked for one, but President Petro is welcome," Sheinbaum stated during her morning press conference. Petro had informed the Colombian Senate president of his travel plans, though the specific academic event was not detailed. This visit follows the Colombian Senate's authorization on August 12 for Petro to travel abroad within a year of his mandate's conclusion, as per the Colombian Constitution for former presidents. The resolution requires him to provide advance notice of his international travel dates and locations. During his presidency, Petro maintained a close political relationship with Mexico and Sheinbaum, sharing regional stances and advocating for greater Latin American integration. In contrast, Sheinbaum confirmed she will meet with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who is currently in Mexico promoting her bid for the next UN Secretary-General position. "Yes, I will see her, I just don't have the day and time yet," the Mexican leader said. Mexico and Brazil continue to back Bachelet's candidacy, even after the Chilean government withdrew its support in March. Bachelet, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, aims to succeed António Guterres, whose second term ends this year.
