Sheinbaum responds to Fox's defense of Ruffo Appel, warns 'don't get burned'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to former President Vicente Fox's defense of Ernesto Ruffo Appel, who faces charges of fiscal tax evasion.

Fox publicly defended Ruffo Appel, stating he would "put his hands in the fire" for the former governor of Baja California, who was arrested last week for alleged tax evasion. Fox posted a video on social media to defend Ruffo Appel, saying he believes in him and knows his integrity and honesty.

During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum ironically suggested Fox "not get burned" and reiterated that Ruffo Appel is the main shareholder of Ingemar, the company accused by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) of leading a tax evasion network in Mexico. She explained that the FGR has been investigating the case for a year, from the discovery of fuel smuggling in railcars to Ruffo Appel's arrest.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the case is not political and noted that eight other people were arrested last week in connection with the company, which imported and distributed fuel without reporting the actual quantities to evade taxes. The president stated that the FGR's investigation is direct and has nothing to do with political matters.

When asked about Ruffo Appel's potential involvement with a political organization and whether fraudulent resources could have funded political assemblies, Sheinbaum said she had no knowledge of such matters.
