Shinsegae’s bold move: Aman Seoul luxury hotel planned for Cheongdam-dong

Shinsegae Group is bringing Aman, one of the world’s best-known luxury hotel brands, to Seoul for the first time. The project reflects Chairman Chung Yong-jin’s push to expand the group’s luxury business and target South Korea’s high-end lifestyle market.

Shinsegae Property said it will develop Aman Seoul with Aman in Cheongdam-dong, an affluent district in Seoul’s Gangnam-gu. The complex will rise from eight underground levels to 38 floors above ground, with total floor space of about 70,000 square meters.

The plan combines a hotel built around the idea of an “urban sanctuary” with 49 branded residences, retail and cultural spaces. It will also include Aman Club, a global members-only community with a private pool, fitness center and lounge.

Chung described Aman Seoul as more than a hotel project, saying, “Aman Seoul will become a new milestone for Seoul’s high-end lifestyle.” He added, “We will continue creating innovative spatial value through our differentiated capabilities in space development.”

Shinsegae Property will lead the project from planning and strategy through development. Aman will take part in the architecture, design and operations, and will directly manage the hotel, residences and community facilities through a long-term contract. Founded in 1988, Aman operates properties including Aman Tokyo, Aman New York and Aman Nai Lert Bangkok. The partnership follows a July agreement between Chung and Aman Group Chairman Vlad Doronin to establish a joint venture for hospitality projects involving hotels, resorts, residences and food and beverage businesses.
