Show Jumping: Surprise Turnaround Sees Kukuk Added to World Championship Team for Aachen

Olympic champion Christian Kukuk has unexpectedly been included in Germany's World Championship show jumping team for the upcoming event in Aachen. Kukuk, who was initially left out, will now join as a reserve rider with his horse Checker.

His inclusion comes after André Thieme, a seasoned rider, withdrew from the competition. Thieme explained his decision was made in the best interest of his mare, Chakaria, due to uncertainties observed at water jumps during a recent competition in Falsterbo, Sweden. "In the interest of my horse and the team, I have decided to forgo a start. We don't want to take any risks," Thieme stated.

Marcus Ehning will move into the four-person main team, while Kukuk and Checker will fill the reserve spot. Kukuk had previously expressed surprise at his initial non-nomination, stating he had received no explanation from national coach Otto Becker. The German team will be led by European Champion Richard Vogel, accompanied by Sophie Hinners and Daniel Deußer.
