'Shrek 5' trailer drops, promising new characters and city adventure for June 2027 release

DreamWorks Animation is set to revive the beloved 'Shrek' franchise with 'Shrek 5', slated for release on June 30, 2027. The first trailer, unveiled on June 16, hints at a fresh take on the series, introducing irreverent new characters and setting the stage for an urban adventure.

Fans can expect the return of the iconic green ogre, his wife Fiona, their children, and the ever-present Donkey. The trailer also features glimpses of characters reminiscent of Olaf from 'Frozen' and dancing gingerbread cookies, suggesting a playful and whimsical tone. The plot appears to involve Donkey eager for city escapades while Shrek is hesitant.

Originally scheduled for release earlier this year, the film faced several delays. DreamWorks initially pushed it to December before settling on the summer 2027 date. This marks a significant gap of seventeen years since the last installment, 'Shrek Forever After', released in 2010.

Directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, 'Shrek 5' continues a franchise that has been a major success. The saga has collectively earned over $2.9 billion at the box office globally. The original 'Shrek' film in 2001 made history by winning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
