Simon Ehammer wins silver, aiming for more medals at European Athletics Championships

Switzerland secured its first medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Tuesday, with Simon Ehammer taking silver in the long jump. The 26-year-old athlete from Appenzell led the competition for a time with a jump of 8.29 meters.

However, the Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece ultimately surpassed Ehammer's mark with a final jump of 8.44 meters. Ehammer, whose personal best is 8.51 meters, acknowledged that while he might have hoped for more, he could not be disappointed with a silver medal.

The competition conditions were not ideal, as wind significantly affected the long jump event. This likely prevented athletes from reaching their absolute best performances. Jason Joseph is expected to compete and potentially add to Switzerland's medal count on Wednesday.

Ehammer's silver medal marks a significant achievement for Swiss athletics at the championships. The team also has high hopes for other athletes, including Audrey Werro, who is considered a leading figure among the Swiss delegation.
