Simultaneous Violence in Cauca and Nariño Raises Alarms: Attacks, Threats, and Highway Bombing

A series of violent events occurring simultaneously in Colombia's southwestern departments of Cauca and Nariño has triggered heightened alert levels among authorities. The incidents include armed attacks, threats involving explosives, and harassment of security forces.

In Cauca, an explosive device detonated at the Mondomo toll booth, causing damage. Additionally, a suspicious cylinder, marked with symbols associated with FARC dissidents, was found on the Pan-American Highway, forcing a complete closure of the route for inspection. The military base at La Salvajina in Suárez was also targeted with rifle fire and drones, attributed to illegal armed groups.

Nariño also experienced significant public order disturbances. Gunfire was directed at the police station in San José de Albán, causing public fear. In La Unión, the presence of a suspected drone prompted security protocols and precautionary evacuations. Threats against police facilities were also reported in Pasto, while municipalities like Ricaurte and Mallama were placed under special security measures with a strong security force presence.

Regional authorities have strongly condemned the violence. Cauca's governor, Octavio Guzmán, visited the affected area and emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "The security and connectivity of Cauca are imperative." He urged the national government to collaborate on protecting the highway and advancing strategic projects, including the expansion of the Popayán–Santander de Quilichao highway and the Popayán–El Estanquillo project.
