Sinkevičius on Nausėda's Work from Madeira: 'I See No Major Tragedy'

Lithuanian Minister Virginijus Sinkevičius has voiced his opinion that President Gitanas Nausėda's decision to work remotely from Madeira during his vacation should not be viewed as a significant issue. "I think the president is also human and I hope the president will rest for a week," Sinkevičius told Žinių radijas. "I believe nothing major will happen; the Seimas is not in session, so there is no need for the president to sign any urgent decree. There is also no extraordinary (European) Council meeting."

Sinkevičius added, "I wish the president, if possible, a quality rest, and I truly see no major tragedy here." His comments suggest a belief that the President is entitled to a break, particularly given the current legislative calendar. The absence of parliamentary sessions and urgent executive decisions implies that presidential duties can be managed without his physical presence in the country.

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius echoed this sentiment, stating on Tuesday that he also sees no problems with the head of state working remotely. He emphasized that remote work is compatible with being both within Lithuania and abroad. This bipartisan support indicates a general acceptance within the government of flexible working arrangements for high-ranking officials.

The President's office confirmed that Gitanas Nausėda will be on the Portuguese island from August 3rd to 10th. During this period, he will work remotely and will be continuously updated on the most important events occurring in the country. It is noted that Lithuanian law does not formally regulate presidential vacations, meaning there is no set period for official leave.
