Six dead in youth welfare facility shooting in Stade, Germany

A wave of shock and disbelief has gripped the northern German town of Stade following a horrific shooting at a youth welfare facility that claimed the lives of six people. The incident unfolded around noon when multiple emergency calls reported gunfire within the facility. Responding officers discovered four deceased individuals inside the building. Despite resuscitation efforts, a fifth person died at the scene, and a sixth succumbed to severe injuries later. Police identified the victims as four women and two men, all adults associated with the youth welfare institution, including staff from a private provider and the local youth welfare office.

Authorities have arrested a 45-year-old man from the Hannover region as the primary suspect. Police indicated he has Turkish roots and was born in Germany. Initial investigations suggest the motive may stem from a custody dispute, as the suspect reportedly had an appointment at the facility concerning the custody of his three-month-old daughter, an appointment he attended with some of the individuals who later became victims.

Remarkably, the baby and the child's mother were unharmed during the incident. The suspect initially fled the scene as a passenger in a car driven by a woman with whom he had a close connection. Police pursued the vehicle, firing shots that apparently hit the tires, leading to the eventual arrest of both individuals. While the suspect had prior records for threats, police noted he had not previously been considered "absolutely violent." A weapon was recovered, but the man did not possess a firearms license. Investigators have established a homicide unit and a tip portal to aid in the ongoing investigation of the "extensive crime scene."
