Six Employees Killed in German Youth Facility Shooting; Custody Dispute Suspected Motive

A fatal shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, on Monday claimed the lives of six employees. Authorities are investigating a custody dispute as the likely motive behind the "cold-blooded" attack, according to the state's interior minister.

The suspect, a 45-year-old German-born man of Turkish descent from the Hanover region, reportedly had an appointment at the facility concerning the custody of his three-month-old daughter. The child and her mother were not among the victims. Police had prior records of the man, including a previous threat, but he was not previously considered "absolutely violent" in the police system, said Lüneburg police chief Kathrin Schuol.

The suspect was apprehended by police on Monday afternoon. Prosecutors have not yet issued an arrest warrant, pending further investigation results. A tip portal has been established for witnesses to submit information, photos, or videos. All six deceased victims were employees of the facility, with five dying at the scene and one succumbing to injuries in the hospital. The weapon has been secured, but how the suspect obtained it remains unclear, especially as he did not possess a firearms license.
