Six Years Without Rajko Dujmić: A Musical Genius Who Created Hits for Generations

Six years ago, Croatian music lost one of its most influential composers and arrangers, Rajko Dujmić. He passed away on August 4, 2020, shortly before his 66th birthday, following severe injuries from a car accident. Dujmić left behind a rich musical legacy that defined generations and continues to hold a special place in Croatian music.

Dujmić was the composer and arranger behind timeless hits such as "Da te ne volim," "Reci mi tiho, tiho," "Saša," "Šuti moj dječače plavi," "Sanja," and "Plava košulja." His work for the band Novi fosili brought them immense popularity across the former Yugoslavia, leading to hundreds of concerts annually and tours in the USSR, USA, Canada, and Europe.

His passion for music began in childhood, earning him the nickname Lima. He wrote his first song at 13 and formed his first band in elementary school. Dujmić honed his musical education through formal schooling and self-study, exploring harmony and melody. Before joining Novi fosili, he played with various groups, including Grupa Marina Škrgatića, Crno-bijeli, and Klan, and performed with Josipa Lisac and Zlatni akordi.

Comparisons were often drawn between Dujmić and ABBA's songwriting duo, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. His signature style featured distinctive melodies, emotionally resonant lyrics, and sophisticated arrangements that appealed to listeners of all ages. Dujmić also made a significant impact on the Eurovision Song Contest, achieving a fourth-place finish with Novi fosili's "Ja sam za ples," a sixth-place with Srebrni krila's "Mangup," and a historic victory in 1989 with Riva's "Rock Me."
