Slipper thrown at MP Pappu Yadav over Parliament Ram temple skit, two detained

Independent MP Pappu Yadav faced an alleged attack during a press conference at his residence in New Delhi when a man threw a slipper at him. The incident occurred on Sunday after Yadav defended his recent skit at the Parliament House complex, which satirized the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple.

The confrontation led to a scuffle between Yadav's supporters and the attacker, identified as Sumit, 34, from Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr. Police detained Sumit and another individual, Happy Sharma, who was reportedly parked outside the MP's house. Yadav's supporters claimed a knife was recovered from Sumit's pocket, a detail police are verifying.

Yadav, the MP from Bihar's Purnia, stated he would not be intimidated by what he called an "attempt on his life." The incident follows a backlash from the BJP, Hindu groups, and others over his skit. An FIR has been filed in Varanasi against Yadav, Rahul Gandhi, and Awadhesh Prasad for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, while BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj and other leaders filed a police complaint in Delhi.

During the press conference, the attacker reportedly questioned Yadav's actions and accused him of insulting Lord Ram. Yadav, however, asserted his actions were not wrong and questioned the exclusivity of saffron color to the RSS, stating, "Saffron is part of our culture. Sanatan is the way of life for us." He further declared, "Those who want to kill me can do so; I will not be scared."

People close to Yadav suggested the two accused were posing as journalists. Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera criticized the Delhi Police over the attack on the MP.
