Slovenia Faces Worst Hop Harvest in Memory Amid Extreme Weather

Slovenian hop growers are bracing for one of the worst harvests in recent memory, with many in the fertile Spodnja Savinjska Valley reporting devastating losses. The region's prized "green gold" has been decimated by a relentless barrage of severe weather, leaving farmers with little hope for a profitable season.

Official figures indicate that hailstorms in May and June alone inflicted damage on approximately 900 hectares of hop fields. This widespread destruction was compounded by subsequent drought and heatwaves, further stressing the already weakened crops. The total number of hop growers has slightly decreased to 116, cultivating 1450 hectares, down from 1600 last year.

Blaž Dimec, a hop cultivation specialist at the Celje Agricultural and Forestry Institute, described the outlook as grim. "The harvest will be below average," he stated. Dimec noted that many veteran growers have expressed shock, having never witnessed such extensive damage from hail in a single year, followed by the punishing effects of drought and heat. The combination of these extreme weather events has created an unprecedented challenge for Slovenia's hop industry.
